Initial COVID-19 Response

Syria was among the many countries in the world which took a series of preventive measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19. These measures included a national lockdown, closure of shops and government institutions, preventing movement between governorates, and between rural and urban areas within governorates, as well as a curfew. These measures had a devastating impact on all aspects of life. However, the most catastrophic influence was on the economic sector and the most vulnerable in the society, including the poor and those in need. These groups depend mostly on daily labor, and if they are unable to work, they are unable to obtain income and thus purchase basic necessities including food.

In response, ADRA-Syria distributed 2,200 Ramadan Iftar meals in Damascus on two days in June 2020 for 2,200 vulnerable families and daily laborers, and 1,500 meals for 1,500 vulnerable beneficiaries (including children, orphans, elderly) in local institutions in September 2021.

Total Beneficiaries: 3,700

Since the COVID-19 pandemic started in Syria in March 2020, and the increased number of cases in Syria, ADRA Syria’s donors agreed to modify project activities to incorporate COVID-19 interventions into ongoing projects. In 2020, ADRA Syria distributed 47,500 hygiene kits, aiming to reduce the spread of COVID-19, in the governorates of Homs, Rural Damascus, Hama, Idlib, Deir Al Zor and Raqqa.

ADRA also distributed 10,000 cleaning kits in the governorates of Rural Damascus and Homs.
